How to Create a Web Page in 10 Easy Steps

Making a web page at Dune-Buggy.com is easy. The online editor gives you an idea of what the page will look like as you create it. If you have a scanner or some way to get photos into your computer, you're halfway there.

First a few tips:

  1. Read the Web Graphics Tutorial to get an idea about how to handle graphics.
  2. If you get confused when using the editor, just click the ? icons.
  3. If you see a box with an X,  it's a broken image. Fix it.

Step 1: Create a New Account and Login

The first thing you need to do is create a web account in BuggyWebs. Simply fill out the form and a random generated password will be mailed to you.

When you get your password hit your back button to go back to the login form or use the link located on the home page to login to your new account.

You should change the password to something you can remember when you first login.

Step 2: Main User Screen

The first time you login, you will be presented with the main screen similar to this.

From here you can manage all the files in your web as well as change your personal information.

Now would be a good time to look at the different templates that you can use. Some are better suited for a gallery and some are better for tech pages. You can also start with a plain page. The choice is up to you. Click on each template and decide on the one you want to use.

Other Web Editors:  In addition you can create pages in Microsoft FrontPage or another stand-alone web page editor. Just upload the pages as you would any other file. It must use the extension - html.   BTW: That is how this page was created and uploaded.

Step 3: Create Your Home Page

By default the first page you create will be called index.html, this is the page that will be loaded when someone looks at your directory.

After you create a page, the Pages in your Web  box will appear. You can click the file name to view the page; or click the edit box to edit the page. Click the edit button  now, so you can check out the editor. Note: The page preview will show the sample pictures until you make your first change to the page.

Pages

Initially your page will look fairly plain. I prefer to upload the photos to give myself something to see while I write the text.

However, depending on your connection speed you may prefer to put the photos in last because they take time to load as you make changes to your page.

Step 4: Get Your Photos Ready

I prefer to name the images and upload them prior to writing the text. The templates are designed to make things simpler for you by using a standard naming format. If you name your pictures using that format, and upload them they will automatically be placed in the template. In this case the format is gallery_todd_kirkwood1_x.jpg with the x being a number from 1 to 6.

Once you have the pictures named, go to the User Center by clicking on the button on the top left of the editor page.

Name

IF you choose to use your own picture names, you can pick the pictures from the Graphic drop down box after you upload them. Just remember to erase the text in the Other picture box. The purpose of the Other  box is so that you can type in an URL or variable to a picture.  It will over-ride what ever you pick in the drop-down box. In addition you may want to enter in some text in the Text box. This text will be displayed while the photo is loading.

Step 5: Upload Your Pictures

Simply pick the photos you want to upload and hit Upload File

This may take some time depending on how big the pictures are that you want to upload.

TIP: In Windows, you have a connection icon that looks like two little computers. If you click on it, it will open a small window so you can see how many bytes you are sending.

Keep an eye on your upload quota. If you use more space than the quota, you will not be able to make any new pages.

Upload

Step 6: Edit the Text

Now click the edit button and you will see your pictures on the page. If you click on any of the small edit arrows, you can change whatever is immediately before the arrow. You may want to look at the User Guide and Quick Start Guide links at the top of the page for further info.

In this picture I have already edited the headline and now I'm editing the text in the intro paragraph. Remember to hit the save button after editing anything.

Step 7: Cleanup

I only have 4 pictures on this page, so it's time to do some house cleaning. Click the edit arrows for anything you want to delete and then hit the delete button. In this case, I'm going to delete the whole table which is everything in the small box.

Step 8: Preview

Hit the view page button to see the final output. Notice how it will look slightly different than it looks in the editor.

I always keep a preview window open and just hit refresh every time I want to see my changes.

Step 9: Name that Page

It is important to fill out the Title and the Metatags so the search engines know what is on the page. Depending on which search engine looks at your page, it may use the text in the page, or the title, or the metatags in order to give it's users the best search results.

Click the title button on the top of the editor and type the title that you want to show up on peoples web browsers.

Click the metatags button and fill in the key words (separated by commas)  Pick these words by thinking of what people will search for when you want them to find your page.

Also type a good description of the page. Often the search engines will use that description when they show the link in the search results.

Title

Step 10: Add the Link to BuggyLinks

The rather ugly Add to BuggyLinks button will take you to a form that will add your page to the BuggyLinks database.

Everything should be filled out for you with the exception of the category. Pick the category that you think it should go in and click the Add Resource button. It's that simple. Within about 24 hours your link will show up in the appropriate category for the world to see.

In addition, you may want to submit the URL to other search engines like: Yahoo.com, excite.com, google.com, alltheweb.com, lycos.com, goto.com

Add

I hope that all made sense, and I hope it helps you get your little piece of the web.

Happy Trails.
